POP UP SHAKESPEARE IN THE FLEET STREET QUARTER
Apex Hotel Temple Court & Stationers' Hall
We are excited to announce that the magic of Shakespeare’s iconic plays will soon come alive in the Fleet Street Quarter to commemorate the momentous 400th anniversary of his First Folio with six free lunchtime performances, sponsored by Fleet Street Quarter BID.
Why is the First Folio so important to Fleet Street? It’s the first collected edition of 16 of Shakespeare’s plays, collated and published in 1623, recorded in the Stationers’ Register right here in the Fleet Street Quarter.
The London publishers entered these works based on their (now commonly understood) genres: “Mr William Shakespeers Comedyes Histories, and Tragedyes” and included plays such as As You Like It, Julius Caesar, Macbeth, Anthony and Cleopatra, The Tempest and more.
Vitally, only 17 of these First Folios were printed: without them, these iconic, rich works may never have survived. Our celebration of Shakespeare’s rich canon continues on Monday 11th September at Stationers’ Hall.
We will have 6 performances from Troubadour Stageworks, taking place over the next couple of months, three at Apex Hotels Temple Court’s Fleet Street Courtyard, and three at Stationers' Hall.
