DR JOHNSON'S SALON SERIES: ORCHESTRA FOR THE EARTH

BRINGING OUTSTANDING CLASSICAL PERFORMANCE INTO DIALOGUE WITH NATURE

Wednesday 29th April, 5.15-6:15pm | Dr Johnson's House, 17 Gough Square

Join us for an intimate musical performance by principal musicians from Orchestra for the Earth in this salon-style concert in the historical home of Dr Johnson.

Dr Johnson's House has a long history of entertaining guests. Richard Gough, who built Gough Square and lived in No. 17, now Dr Johnson's House, devised movable walls in order to open up the first floor and would hold soirees of musical recitals, poetry performance and amateur dramatics to entertain his guests.

In Johnson's day, although he could never afford such lavish gatherings, the practice of reciting poetry - and with it a general celebration of the English language through all he read and wrote here - remained strong.

The Salon Series aims to uphold this tradition, with intimate performances from a variety of musical talent. Join us for a glass of wine and an evening of good company, conversation, and of course, music.

Rivers and Landscapes

From the glittering currents of The Blue Danube to the flowing sweep of Smetana’s Moldau and the bright, ceremonial sparkle of Handel’s Water Music, this programme brings together some of classical music’s most vivid responses to water and the natural world. At its heart is Dvořák’s much-loved American Quartet—a work infused with folk character, wide horizons and a deep sense of landscape.

By turns lyrical, expansive and full of movement, this is an hour of music shaped by rivers, dancing water and the open air.

Performed by a quartet of principal musicians from Orchestra for the Earth, the UK-based ensemble bringing outstanding classical performance into dialogue with nature, climate and the living world.
