DR JOHNSON AND LOVE WITH CELINE LUPPO MCDAID
THE DR JOHNSON'S HOUSE LECTURE SERIES
Portrait of Dr. Samuel Johnson and his wife, Elizabeth, attributed to Hugh Barron, 1747 - 1791, Bonhams
Dr Johnson's House Lunchtime Lecture Series, sponsored by Fleet Street Quarter. The free lunchtime lecture at Dr Johnson’s House this February, will be delivered by Director, Celine Luppo McDaid. In a nod towards February being the month of romance, we ask, how does one define 'love'?
Johnson married a woman nearly twice his age, for love, and was plunged into the deepest depression of his life upon losing her in 1752, while working on his Dictionary.
Join the the Dr Johnson's House Curator for lunch and a lecture to explore Johnson's (complex) views on love and see just how many definitions the great lexicographer came up with for the greatest of human emotions...
What say you to the following?
"It is always necessary to be loved, but not always necessary to be reverenced." Johnson: Rambler No. 188 (January 4, 1752)
Lunch will be provided to enjoy during the talk. You will also have the opportunity to explore the House afterwards, should you have enough time. The lecture will run 12:45 - 13:45. Please let us know of any dietary requirement at least 48 hours in advance if possible.
